Kakuriyo (隠り世)
The Hidden World
Info
Kakuriyo is the Spirit World, the vibrant and alien spiritual reflection of the mortal plane. It is not a place of reward or punishment like Heaven or Jigoku, but a primordial Spirit Wilds, an ecosystem teeming with a vast diversity of entities. Its landscapes are shaped by emotion and memory, and its laws are not those of human morality, but of spiritual power, purity, and respect. For Kikon-jin it is a familiar, if dangerous, parallel reality; for mortals, it is an almost universally fatal environment.

Notable Inhabitants & Sub-Groups
- The Kami (神 - The God-Spirits): The oldest and most powerful inhabitants. The immense, primal consciousnesses of major natural features.
- The Ayakashi (妖 - The Myriad Spirits): The most common type of entity. The "wildlife" of Kakuriyo, including territorial nature spirits (Kijin/Chirei), spirits of old objects (Tsukumogami), and powerful animal spirits (Mononoke).
- The Yūrei (幽霊 - The Lingering Dead): True ghosts, distinct from Kikon-jin. A complete mortal soul anchored between worlds by an unresolved purpose or emotion, often trapped in a tragic loop.
Physical Description & Layers
The Spirit World is not uniform; it reflects the cultural and emotional resonance of the mortal lands it mirrors.
1. Utsushiyo no Kage (The Shadow of the World)
The "Near Umbra." This is the immediate reflection of the physical world. * Appearance: A distorted mirror of the city. Buildings exist but may appear overgrown with phantom vines or crumbling if the building has "bad feng shui." * Inhabitants: Minor spirits, urban Yokai, and the echoes of strong emotions. * Navigation: Matches physical geography 1:1. You can walk down "Spirit 5th Avenue."
2. Shinrin (The Deep Wilds)
Once one wanders too far from the "emotional roads" of humanity, the city fades into the Deep Wilds. * Appearance: Pure conceptual nature. Endless forests of silver birch, oceans of ink, or mountains that float in the sky. * Inhabitants: The Kami (God-Spirits) and ancient Mononoke. * Navigation: Geography is symbolic. To find the "Court of Winter," you must walk with a cold heart or follow the scent of snow, regardless of compass direction.
3. Tengoku no Mon (The Celestial Threshold)
The theoretical "Upper Layer" where the Spirit World brushes against the divine bureaucracy of Heaven. * Appearance: Blinding light, geometric perfection, and crushing authoritarian pressure. * Status: Forbidden. Even looking at it burns the eyes of the undead.
Regional Reflections
- Yamato (The Ukiyo-e Layer): In the East, Kakuriyo resembles a living Ukiyo-e woodblock print. The colors are vibrant and flat; clouds curl in stylized spirals; the wind carries visible lines of motion. Spirits manifest as classic Yokai or divine beasts.
- The West (The Gothic Echo): In Western territories, the realm is desaturated and imposing. It resembles a crumbling, monumental version of reality—gothic spires, industrial decay, and grey mists. Spirits here appear as translucent ghosts, specters, or clockwork horrors.
- The Barrier (The Wall): Crossing over is a visceral event. It is not a portal, but a Ripple. When a Kikon-jin steps through, the air distorts like water disturbed by a stone. For a moment, the background blurs and refracts before snapping into the Spirit World's alien clarity.
- Dragon Veins: Invisible in the mortal world, here they are blinding rivers of light (Yang) or abyssal black currents (Yin) that crisscross the sky and earth, pulsing with the heartbeat of the land.
Supernatural Aspects
Dangers for Mortals
For a mortal, crossing into Kakuriyo is almost always a death sentence. Their living, Yang-aspected soul is a violent anomaly. - Spiritual Disintegration: The sheer spiritual pressure seeks to break down a living soul, unraveling their sense of self and memories. - The Taint of the Alien: Prolonged exposure to Kakuriyo's alien logic and amoral nature can shatter a mortal's sanity. - Predation: To many Ayakashi, a mortal soul is a beacon of vibrant, delicious Yang Chi—a rare and tempting meal.
The Kikon-jin Experience
Kikon-jin are semi-native to Kakuriyo and can navigate it with care. - A Familiar Unfamiliar: A Kikon-jin can perceive and interact with Kakuriyo with ease. However, they are still physical beings and are seen as visitors or "half-breeds" by many native spirits. - A Matter of Cultivated Relationships: A Kikon-jin's safety is entirely dependent on their actions and reputation. Respect, appropriate offerings, and diplomatic navigation of spiritual territories are key to survival.
Major Domains (The Spirit Courts)
Just as Jigoku has Fiefdoms, Kakuriyo has Courts ruled by powerful Kami. - The Golden Court (Kogane no Niwa): The domain of Order and Sun. A bureaucratic paradise of golden light and strict rules. - The Iron Forest (Tetsu no Mori): The domain of Modernity. A sprawling city of sentient machines and internet-data spirits. - The Midnight Market (Mayonaka no Ichi): The neutral zone. A bustling bazaar that exists in the twilight between layers, where anything can be bought.
