悪霊: Akuryo

Akuryo

Info

The Akuryo is a malevolent, semi-sentient spiritual entity that serves as the corrupting engine of a Kikon-jin. Born when a human's lower soul is tormented and twisted by the essence of a specific Hell, it forcibly reunites with its higher counterpart to reanimate a corpse. It is both the source of a Kikon-jin's greatest power and their most intimate, relentless antagonist.

Nature & Principles

  • Core Definition: " A parasitic spiritual entity formed from the Hell-corrupted lower, instinctual aspect of a human soul. Its forced bonding with the higher soul (Tamashī) is the supernatural paradox that creates a Kikon-jin."
  • Origin: " An Akuryo is born when the lower aspect of a soul is dragged into Jigoku, where it is tormented and infused with the realm's essence and Ma-ki. It is then inexorably dragged back to the mortal world by the tether of its higher counterpart, the Tamashī."
  • Fundamental Properties: The Akuryo is a master manipulator that knows its host's desires and fears intimately. It exists in a constant struggle to sever its bond with the Tamashī, feeding on its host's pain, fear, and rage to grow stronger.

Role & Abilities

  • Internal Antagonist: The Akuryo's primary goal is to gain dominance, sever the soul-bond, and return to its Hell, even if it means the Kikon-jin's destruction.
  • Source of Power: " It acts as a reservoir of Ma-ki, providing instinctive knowledge of Jigoku and serving as the source of the unique, Hell-specific powers a Kikon-jin wields, such as manifesting claws or armored skin."

悪霊の芸: Arts of the Akuryo

The Akuryo is the engine of a Kikon-jin's most destructive and terrifying powers. These arts are born from the torment of Jigoku and fueled by raw, predatory instinct. To wield them is to invite the Akuryo's influence closer, a Faustian bargain that offers immense power in exchange for a piece of one's humanity. The specific expression of these arts is often unique, filtered through the thematic essence of the Kikon-jin's Hell of Origin.

地獄の化身: Jigoku no Keshin (Incarnation of Hell)

  • Domain: Taigen no Michi (Paths of Manifestation)
  • Source: Akuryo
  • Description: The most iconic and dangerous Akuryo art, allowing the Kikon-jin to channel their inner demon and warp their physical form into a monstrous visage. The specifics of the transformation are always deeply personal, reflecting the nature of the Akuryo's Hell of Origin—a Kikon-jin from the Hell of Mutilation might sprout blades of bone, while one from a fire-themed Hell might manifest smoldering skin and burning eyes.
  • Application & Nuance: This art provides a massive surge in physical power (strength, durability, and new attack forms) at the significant risk of losing control.
    • This is the signature art of the Kijin no Michi, whose followers train relentlessly to master this form, viewing it as a "war mask" to be worn in battle.
    • Followers of the Yūgen no Michi or Gedatsu no Michi view this transformation with terror, considering its use a catastrophic failure of discipline.
    • A Daraku-jin is often permanently locked in a state of Jigoku no Keshin.

怨念の楔: Onnen no Kusabi (Wedge of Grudge)

  • Domain: Konpaku no Gei (Arts of the Soul & Spirit)
  • Source: Akuryo
  • Description: The Akuryo is a being of profound suffering, and this art weaponizes that essence. The user channels their Akuryo's malice and embeds a "wedge" of this negative energy into a target's soul or the spiritual essence of a location. This is not a quick-acting attack, but a creeping curse that festers over time, causing paranoia, spiritual decay, misfortune, or obsessive behavior in a person, and rot and decay in a place.
  • Application & Nuance: This is a subtle and insidious art of destruction.
    • Practitioners of the Kage no Michi are infamous masters of this art, using it for long-term assassination and to destabilize rival Mon from the shadows.
    • Using this art leaves a noticeable taint of Ma-ki on the user's soul, making them more susceptible to their Akuryo's whispers for a time.

弱点の視線: Jakuten no Shisen (Gaze of the Weak Point)

  • Domain: Konpaku no Gei (Arts of the Soul & Spirit)
  • Source: Akuryo
  • Description: The Akuryo is a master manipulator that knows its host's fears intimately. This art extends that predatory insight outward. By attuning to their Akuryo's senses, the Kikon-jin can perceive the metaphysical "cracks" in a person, object, or even a social situation. They can sense a person's deepest fear, a sword's hidden flaw, or the unspoken tension that could shatter an alliance.
  • Application & Nuance: This art provides crucial, often corrupting, information.
    • It is a vital tool for followers of the Kage no Michi for espionage and blackmail.
    • A Kikon-jin on the Netsujō no Michi might use this to understand and protect their loved ones, but risks becoming paranoid and seeing threats where there are none, as the Akuryo's perspective is always one of fear and aggression.

魔気の放出: Ma-ki no Hōshutsu (Eruption of Demonic Energy)

  • Domain: Ki no Kōryū (Chi Manipulation & Resonance)
  • Source: Akuryo
  • Description: " The dark counterpart to the Tamashī's Hama no Hadō. Instead of projecting purity, the Kikon-jin unleashes a raw, untamed wave of their Akuryo's essence. This eruption of nascent Ma-ki is incredibly corrosive to both spiritual and physical matter. It can cause living things to wither, wards to decay, and pure Chi to be consumed. It is a chaotic and destructive blast, difficult to control and damaging to the user's surroundings."
  • Application & Nuance: This is an act of desperation or extreme aggression.
    • Using this art is considered a grave transgression by most Paths, as it actively introduces Ma-ki into the world.
    • Overuse can create a "Spiritual Dead Zone" and will heavily tax the user's Tamashī, which must work to re-establish balance after such a profound act of corruption.

Vulnerabilities & Limitations

  • Co-Dependent: " It cannot permanently break free from the Tamashī without destroying the host body. Its power is unreliable and can be withheld to manipulate the host."
  • Vulnerable to Purity: It is severely weakened or repelled by genuine sacred energies (such as from a pure Shinto shrine) and can be harmed by specific spiritual weapons.
  • Suppression: " The Tamashī's influence can be strengthened through meditation and discipline. Rituals can temporarily suppress the Akuryo's power, and support from a Nakama is a critical defense."

Relationships

  • Tamashī: The higher soul fragment. The Akuryo's eternal adversary, partner, and jailer.
  • Kikon-jin: The composite being created by the forced union of an Akuryo and a Tamashī.
  • Akuryo Echo: " A diluted, non-sentient form present in a Hantsuki, inherited from a Kikon-jin parent."
