帰魂人: Kikon-jin
The People of the Returned Soul "We are not monsters born of a bite. We are the scars left when the world refuses to let a soul die."
Info
Kikon-jin (帰魂人, lit. "Returned Soul People") are unique, corporeal undead reanimated by the forceful reunification of their sundered souls after death. They inhabit their original bodies, now sustained by Chi, and are locked in an eternal internal struggle between their preserved human essence (the Tamashī) and a parasitic demonic entity forged in the hells of Jigoku (the Akuryo). Distinct from Western vampires, their condition arises from individual spiritual trauma, not an embrace.
Info
To speak of the Kikon-jin is to speak of a paradox: a being that is both a temple and a prison. They are not the mindless hunger of the western ghoul, nor the romanticized aristocrat of the penny dreadful. They are trauma given form, a soul stitched back together with hellfire and regret. Do not mistake their civility for humanity; the beast is not at the door, it is in the living room, and it is always hungry. — Haku'jin
Nature & Principles
- Core Definition: " A sentient, corporeal undead being created when a human's Hell-corrupted lower soul (Akuryo) forcibly re-bonds with their higher soul (Tamashī), reanimating their original corpse."
- Origin & Creation: " Kikon-jin are victims of a cosmic violation. Upon a death marked by violence or significant unresolved issues ("karmic debt"), the soul (Kon) shatters. The lower, instinctual half is dragged to Jigoku for torment, where it is twisted into a parasitic entity, the Akuryo. The higher, rational half, the Tamashī, remains anchored to the mortal world by its own profound attachments—love, duty, or unresolved trauma. This refusal to pass on eventually pulls the corrupted Akuryo back from Hell, forcing a violent reunification within the original corpse that reanimates it."
- Paths to Undeath:
- Jigoku Escape: The most common path, described above.
- Improper Rites: Failure to perform correct burial rites can leave a soul fractured and vulnerable.
- Being Forgotten: In rare cases, a spirit whose memory is utterly erased may have its soul destabilize, allowing the lower aspect to fester and seize the abandoned form.
- Not Embraced: Kikon-jin cannot "make" others. Their condition is the result of individual spiritual trauma.
- Paths to Undeath:
- Fundamental Properties: They are composed of a reanimated physical body sustained by Chi, housing two opposed soul fragments. They are potentially immortal but require a constant intake of Chi and a carefully maintained balance between Yin and Yang to avoid spiritual and physical deterioration.
Function & Role in the World
- Primary Purpose: " Kikon-jin exist in a state of conflict, driven by the dual, opposing goals of their two souls. The Tamashī strives for redemption and spiritual release (Gedatsu no Taigan, The Great Purpose), while the Akuryo seeks only to dominate its other half and eventually return to Jigoku."
- Social Structure: " Kikon-jin society is highly structured, mirroring feudal Japanese hierarchies with Mon (Great Houses) and Nakama (small, bonded peer groups). Their philosophies are often defined by the Gedō no Michi, six philosophical paths dedicated to managing their internal conflict."
Manifestations & Abilities
Inherent Traits
- Supernatural Physique: Possess strength, speed, and resilience far beyond mortal limits.
- Spiritual Perception (Rei-Kan): " An innate ability to perceive spirits, Chi flows, and the spiritual world (Kakuriyo)."
- Akuryo Signature: Emanate a spiritual signature that other supernatural beings can sense, often revealing the specific Hell in which their Akuryo was forged.
Active Abilities (Chi Manipulation)
The innate ability to sense, absorb, and channel Chi to fuel their existence and powers. - Niku-Jiki (Flesh Eating): Consuming flesh (Yin from dead, Yang from living). - Iki-Jiki (Breath Drinking): Siphoning Yang Chi from living breath. - Kanjo-Jiki (Emotion Feeding): Absorbing potent emotions. - Kūki-Jiki (Ambient Feeding): Meditatively drawing Chi from resonant environments.
Geihō (Arts)
Kikon-jin can master various supernatural arts, generally categorized into: - Taigen no Michi (Paths of Manifestation): " Powers that alter their physical form (e.g., Jigoku no Keshin)." - Konpaku no Gei (Arts of the Soul): Powers that manipulate emotions, spirits, and souls.
Vulnerabilities & Limitations
- The Internal War: " Their greatest weakness is the Akuryo itself—a constant internal enemy seeking to sabotage, control, and ultimately destroy the Kikon-jin."
- Sunlight (Hikari Kabure): Harmful, causing damage ranging from painful burns to complete disintegration (Final Death).
- Yin Overload: Rapid decay into dust.
- Yang Overload: Combustion and explosion.
- Spiritual Vulnerabilities: Susceptible to Purity (salt, running water), Sacred Ground, and spiritual wards like Ofuda.
- Karishi (Temporary Death): A state of profound inertness triggered by severe trauma or Chi depletion.
Notable Variations
- Chi Balance Specialists: Some Kikon-jin specialize in either Yin (stealth/spirit arts) or Yang (physical power/vitality). Balance Masters are the most versatile.
- Hell of Origin: " A Kikon-jin's personality and powers are deeply influenced by their Akuryo's Hell of origin (e.g., Kurokumo Jigoku vs. Kyoukan Jigoku)."
Relationships
- Tamashī & Akuryo: The two opposed soul fragments whose eternal struggle defines the Kikon-jin.
- Hantsuki: " The rare, living offspring of Kikon-jin, who inherit a diluted Akuryo Echo."
- Jigoku: The origin realm of their corrupting power and the source of their deepest trauma.
